A summary of a sermon from James Colgan, November 30th 2025
Build on God's Truth, Not Human Effort: Like tall buildings need deep foundations in rock, believers must anchor their lives in God's Word. Psalm 118:8 (the Bible's middle verse) says it's better to trust in the Lord than in people. True righteousness comes from trusting God, not our own works.
Discern Which Voice You're Hearing: Three voices compete for our attention - God's voice (truth and life), human voices (which can build up or destroy), and the enemy's voice (deception and doubt). Fill your mind with Scripture and surround yourself with godly people to hear truth above the lies.
Understand Sin's Pattern and God's Restoration: Sin follows a downward spiral: deception → doubt → desire → disobedience → distress → disguise/blame. But rooted in God's righteousness, the pattern reverses upward: truth → trust → pleasing God → obedience → spiritual fruit → restoration.
The Three M's - Community is Essential: Spiritual growth requires relationships: Mentors (mature believers speaking truth into your life), Mates (fellow believers walking alongside you in the trenches), and Mission (people you're discipling). Jesus modeled this pattern and Paul lived it out.
Be Available for Those Struggling: Many battling addictions and sexual sin are desperately seeking help but can't find available Christians. While busy with good things (family, work, church), we must better manage our time to be preseesnt for those crying out for mentorship and accountability in their fight for righteousness.
