When God's Heart is Bigger Than Ours

God pursues us, God pursues others, and God pursues our hearts.

When we hear the story of Jonah, we usually think of the fish. But Jonah is about far more than a great fish or a reluctant prophet. It is about a God whose mercy is bigger than our boundaries—and whose love reaches people we might rather see judged than forgiven.

Jonah ran from God because he didn’t want Nineveh, a wicked city, to receive God’s mercy. Yet God pursued him. Through a storm, a fish, and a difficult journey, God was not simply trying to get Jonah to obey. He was working to transform Jonah’s heart.

And perhaps that’s where we find ourselves today.

Have you ever wanted God to change someone else, when He was inviting you to let Him change you? Have you ever cared more about being right, protecting your comfort, or holding on to resentment than loving someone who needed grace?

In Jonah 4, God asks a question that reaches beyond the prophet and into our own hearts: “Should I not have compassion?”

God cared about Nineveh. He cared about the people Jonah had written off. And He cared about Jonah, even when Jonah’s heart was out of step with His own.

The good news is that God pursues us, too. You cannot outrun His grace. When you have resisted, fallen short, or struggled to surrender, God’s invitation remains: Come back to Me.

And as we receive His mercy, He invites us to extend that same mercy to others. The people who frustrate us. The people who disagree with us. The people we might be tempted to give up on. God’s love reaches farther than our comfort zones.

This week, perhaps the prayer isn’t simply, “Lord, help me do better.” Perhaps it is:

“Lord Jesus, I surrender. My agenda, my resentment, my need for control, and my desire to have things my way. You are my Life. Live Your life through me.”

You don’t have to manufacture the strength to love God or love others on your own. Jesus gave His life for us, and His grace meets us right where we are. As we surrender our hearts to Him, He teaches us to see ourselves and others through His eyes.

So, as you step into this new week, remember: God pursues you. God pursues those who are far from Him. And God is pursuing your heart—not merely to make you more religious, but to make you more like Christ.

His mercy is greater than our boundaries. His grace is greater than our failures. And His invitation is simple: Let Me live My life through you.
