“Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift!” — 2 Corinthians 9:15

Some gifts leave us searching for words. We open them, look at the person who gave them, and all we can say is, “Wow. Thank you.”

That’s where the apostle Paul arrives when he considers God’s greatest gift to us: Jesus Christ.

And that gift gives us a reason to be thankful—not just when life is good, but even when it isn’t.

It’s easy to give thanks when prayers are answered, relationships are restored, and everything seems to fall into place. But what about when we’re still waiting? When life hurts? When the future feels uncertain?

The prophet Habakkuk faced a world falling apart. Yet he declared, “I will rejoice in the LORD; I will take joy in the God of my salvation” (Habakkuk 3:18).

That little word yet changes everything.

Habakkuk wasn’t pretending life was easy. He was choosing to trust God even when his circumstances gave him little reason to rejoice. He understood that although circumstances change, God’s character does not.

We don’t give thanks because everything is good. We give thanks because God is good, even when everything isn’t.

And our gratitude grows deeper when we remember who we are in Christ. Our worth isn’t determined by our success, our health, our finances, or someone else’s opinion. Our life is found in Jesus. Like a branch connected to the vine, we don’t have to manufacture life ourselves. We learn to rest in Him, receive His grace, and let gratitude flow from that place.

So this Thanksgiving, take a moment to look back. Remember God’s provision, His mercy, the people He has placed in your life, and the ordinary blessings that are so easy to overlook. And if this season brings grief, disappointment, or unanswered prayers, bring those things to Him, too. You don’t have to pretend the pain isn’t real to trust that God is faithful.

Perhaps thanksgiving isn’t simply a date on the calendar. Perhaps it’s a daily posture of the heart—a quiet, continual response to the One who gives us life.

Tomorrow morning, before reaching for your phone, whisper, “Todah. Thank You, Lord.”

Give thanks in the joyful moments, the difficult ones, and the seasons when you’re still waiting. Not because you understand everything, but because you know the One who holds your life.

And above all, give thanks for Jesus—the gift we could never earn, never deserve, and never fully explain.

Your life isn’t found in everything you have. Your life is found in Christ. And He is enough.

“Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift!”
